Making Spheres: Skill and grit. Lot's of Grit
For those who create crystal and stone spheres, it is no walk in the park—it's a journey that demands both skill and a hefty dose of grit. From selecting the perfect raw material to the painstaking process of shaping and polishing, every step is a test of patience and perseverance. I am amazed at the talent these artists have. The skill and precision is something to be in awe of which, in the end, produces the beautiful cyrystal spheres we sell and you display.
The very beginning is to get a chunk of raw crystal, stone or other suitable mineral. This could be from a mine, a distributor or someone's collection. Then, it's off to the shaping process:
- Rough Shaping: They start by cutting down the mineral into a rough sphere shape using a saw or by grinding it down. Think of it like sculpting, but with a rock.
- Grinding: Once you've got something that looks vaguely spherical, it goes into a machine with progressively finer grits to smooth out the surface. It's like going from sandpaper to finer sandpaper in woodworking.
- Polishing: After the surface is smooth, they polish it with even finer abrasives or sometimes with a polishing compound. This step brings out the shine and really makes those the mineral colours pop.
- Final Touch: Sometimes, they might add a gloss or sealant to protect the surface or enhance the shine.
The whole process can be done by hand, but for precision and speed, machines often take over. It's a bit like a reverse egg; instead of starting with a sphere and making it into something else, you're turning a lump of rock into the perfect sphere.

- Unity and Harmony: In spiritual contexts, the sphere often represents the unity of all things - a reminder that everything is part of a larger whole, where differences are just surface details.
